Laos, Phonsavan – Pukyo Guesthouse

This guesthouse, Pukyo, in Phonsavan was found through Airbnb and right from the first communications with host David we knew we would be looked after and we were. David and his wife were amazing hosts and nothing was too much trouble.Pukyo Guesthouse_Phonsavan_Laos_1We were in the dormitory room with 4 x large single beds and private bathroom – high ceilings and lots of windows made this room seem more spacious and airy. Three of the beds were pretty comfortable but Paula managed to get the hard one. The room had one fixed wall fan that wasn’t really needed when we were there as the overnight temperatures were only in the high teens.Pukyo Guesthouse_Phonsavan_Laos_2The inviting common spaces give true meaning to ‘guesthouse’ with a large dining table, couches and an inviting outdoor space to relax and take in the lovely views. The pool wasn’t functioning during our stay which the boys were a bit disappointed about but they have plenty of games and a ball on hand for guests to use. Wi-fi was consistent and quite strong.Pukyo Guesthouse_Phonsavan_Laos_3Breakfast was provided each morning with fresh baguettes and spreads, eggs cooked in your choice of style, juice and fruit on offer. Filtered water, tea & coffee were always available, as was a selection of fresh fruits.

David has a great relationship with a local guide, Mr Vang (a local Laotian in his early 20’s with good English) who picked us up from the bus station. He can provide a variety of tours around Phonsavan and has wonderful knowledge and first-hand information to impart during the tours. Prices vary depending on numbers. We visited sites 1, 2 & 3 of the Plain of Jars (unbelievable and a real must) and the Old City. The UXO Information Centre (about 4-5kms from the guesthouse) is well worth a visit – has a huge about of information.

We visited the newly started night markets which already have plenty of clothing stalls and a few food stalls – no doubt it will only continue to grow.
