Sri Lanka, Ella – Happy Laugh Hostel

We stayed for 2 nights in a ‘family room with bathroom’ and our host kindly picked us up from Ella township when we arrived by bus. This was very helpful because we aren’t sure we would have actually found ‘Happy Laugh Hostel‘ as it is new (still under construction actually) and not marked correctly on the booking.com map.

We had a good sized room with 3 x double beds, table and chair and drying rack but was missing the ceiling fan as it hadn’t been installed yet. Bathroom was a good size with open shower, toilet and sink.Happy Laugh Hostel_Ella_Sri LankaThe large outdoor sitting area is lovely to relax in and will be even better once all completed. The host has big plans for a large hostel, bar, balcony area and swimming pool. Happy Laugh Hostel_Ella_Sri Lanka_1Washing machine on site was free to use. Breakfast was some Sri Lankan dishes like dahl, chilli eggs, rice, bread and spreads and tea and coffee.

The electricity was out when we arrived and when it wasn’t restored by evening the host arranged a generator. Wi-Fi was good when it was working but we had some issues during our last 12 hours or so. The host advised that the building has been treated so we didn’t have any issues with mosquitoes.

After we checked out and had arrived in Kandy we realised we had left our passports. They quickly found them and arranged to get them to us the next day via the train. So incredibly grateful.

While our family room was pretty much complete the remaining buildings are still under construction and nothing of this was mentioned in the listing before we booked so perhaps this is why the price was very reasonable.

Distant to:

  • Ella Township – 3kms

Tuk tuks didn’t like to travel out to this location because the road isn’t great in parts but no doubt as the town expands (which is already happening) hopefully the road will be improved. The host kindly took us into town when he was available.

Price = $37 NZD per night (included breakfast)
